Sixty-four healthy volunteers without any otologic disease and 64 patients who fulfilled all the criteria for unilateral Meniere disease underwent 3 T MRI using a T2-weighted steady state free precession (SSFP) sequence, without contrast material injection. Our aim was to compare high-resolution T2-weighted images of the saccule in normal subjects with histological sections from cadavers and to identify its changes in Meniere disease, compared to healthy volunteers. In addition to cortical vessels (mainly veins), contrast MR sequences are perfect for the 3D visualization of contrast-enhancing high-grade gliomas.Įndolymphatic hydrops can be studied on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using images acquired 4 h after intravenous injection of Gd-chelate. Apart from cortical sulci/gyri anatomy, fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences are ideal for the 3D visualization of non-enhancing diffuse low-grade gliomas (LGG) using the VR technique.

Results: 3D VR technique assists in glioma surgery by- preoperative simulation of skin incision and craniotomy, virtual cortical surface marking and navigation for deep-seated gliomas, preoperative visualization of morbid cortical surface & venous anatomy in surfacing gliomas, identifying the inter-venous surgical corridor in both surfacing & deep-seated gliomas, and pre-/ postoperative virtual 3D images highlighting the exact spatial geometric residual tumor location and extent of resection in low-grade gliomas (LGG).Ĭonclusions: Image-guided neurosurgery with 3D VR technique using RadiAnt software is an economical, easy to learn, and user-friendly method of simulating glioma surgery, especially in resource-constrained countries where expensive neuronavigation systems are not readily available.

We used RadiAnt software for generating virtual 3D images using the VR technique on a computer running Microsoft Windows operating system. Preoperative clinical data, including patient demographics, preoperative planning details (done using VR technique), and intraoperative details, including relevant photos and videos, were collected. Methods: We included six supratentorial gliomas operated at our center between January 2019 and March 2021 in this study. In this paper, we discuss several nuances of the 3D VR technique not described hitherto. Three-dimensional (3D) virtual reconstruction & surgical simulation using 3D volume rendering (VR) is a frugal and excellent technique for preoperative surgical planning and image-guided neurosurgery. Except for ultrasound, other methods are expensive. For kinematic analysis of the knees, length measurements on 3D-CT using OsiriX program can be used as alternatives to real measurements with less than 0.3-mm accuracy and very high reliability.īackground: Different techniques of performing image-guided neurosurgery exists viz neuronavigation systems, intraoperative ultrasound, and intraoperative magnetic resonance (MR), each with its limitations. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were very high between trials and between replicates (ICC=0.998 and 0.999, respectively). There were no significant differences between the replicates and real measurements (p=0.544 and 0.622 for replicates 1 and 2, respectively). The mean differences between OsiriX and real measurements were less than 0.1 mm in both replicates, and maximum differences were less than 0.3 mm.

All measurements were recorded by a principal (replicate 1, trial 1) and a secondary observer (replicate 2, trial 1) and were repeated once by each observer (trial 2). The lengths between tunnel orifices were measured using Mitutoyo Digimatic digital calipers to establish the gold standard, and with the OsiriX program in 3D multi-planar reformatting mode for comparison. 3D-CT scans were made of 14 frozen pig knees with five transosseous holes in the metaphyseal portion of femur. We evaluated the accuracy and reliability of length measurement on CT with OsiriX software.

However, when CT data are processed and handled manually using image processing programs to yield 3D image and coordinate value, systematic and random errors should be validated. There is a growing interest in three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) as a research tool for the study of bone, joint anatomy, and kinematics.
